Teenagers from several high schools in the west central area of Minnesota recently participated in a video contest with the theme “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?”
Partnering with a company in their area, eight student teams from Detroit Lakes High School and Henning Public Schools produced a short video about careers in manufacturing.
Members of the West Central Steering Committee Dream It. Do It. Minnesota judged the videos based upon their content/storyline, creativity, educational value, and, of course, how they answered the question “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” In addition to recognizing first, second, and third places, there was also a “Viewer’s Choice Award” for the video receiving the most votes from the public through the website at the end of April.
The culmination of the contest was an awards ceremony on May 3 at Tri-State Manufacturers’ Association’s Robotics Showcase in Alexandria. The 85 attendees, comprised of manufacturers, association members, teachers, and students, were welcomed by a red carpet and the ballroom decorated in a Dream It. Do It. theme. Cash prizes were awarded to the winning students and to their schools.
The winners were:
- First place: Henning Public Schools’ video about Lund Boats.
- Second place and Viewers’ Choice winner: Henning Public Schools’ video about Paydac Industries Inc.
- Third place: Detroit Lakes High School’s video about Forum Communications Printing.
Other companies featured were Industrial Finishing Services, Innova Industries, Northern Contours, and Shoremaster.
The “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing?” video contest started in the Lehigh Valley area of Pennsylvania and is now being replicated in other parts of the country as a best practice shared via the national Dream It. Do It. network.
360 and Dream It. Do It. Minnesota would like to thank the Tri-State Manufacturers’ Association, West Central Initiative, the participating manufacturers, and the West Central Dream It. Do It. Minnesota steering committee for their support of the “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing” video contest and the following manufacturers for opening their doors to students:
